l am selling a car thru craigslist...now after a few emails..someoen is intrested in buying my car...despite its condition..and this person is ready to pay me..but wants to send out a certified check and then have the car picked up...but he wants me to email him all my contact info so he can write on the check ..and then mail it to me and he picks up the car via towing company...does this sound legit to you?

Nope. That certified check is most likely bogus and the car will be long gone before you or your bank will be notified that the check is a forgery.

Cash money or a wire transfer only and then he can bring whatever he wants to haul the car away.

And do not send him ANY personal information over an email other than your name and an address to pick up the car. Preferrably not your house.

Sounds fine as long as you do not give him a signed title before you verify the check is good. It sometimes takes several days to verify so do not give him the title until the check clears.

On second thought if the car is running and hes not coming in person, don't. On first read l assumed the car was not running and he was coming with a tow truck.

While it may be legit, it does sound like a scam. The big tip off is that you never meet this person at any point throughout the transaction and he wants to buy it without even looking at it or test driving it.

There r more certified check scams than l can keep up with. If ur gut tells u something is wrong, then something is probably wrong. It may be totally legit, but here is another possible scenario:

Classic certified check scam: He sends a certified check for $2000 more than the price of the car & asks u to send a check for the remainder back to him. The problem is, the certified check is fake. It takes about 3-5 business days for ur bank to decide that this check is a fraud -- in the meantime they will accept it for deposit, which gives the depositor a false sense of security.

I've sold cars to people all over the world, but always with a wire transfer. l would deal locally if at all possible. Why does this guy want to go through the trouble & expense for a car in poor condition? Ca not he find junkers in his own town? Or is there another motive?

This is a common scam.

The check is sent to you, & looks every bit to be legitimate. However, once the bank tries to get the funds from the account on the check, this is when the deal goes sour.

When ur bank finds out that the check is bogus, who do they come after? Yep, you. Add to that, ur car is gone. You've already let them pick it up. So, you're out the money AND the car.

It is happened to thousands of folks. You have to ask yourself, ''why would anyone want to purchase a car site-unseen, especially if it is not in the best condition (as u say)?''

Best to keep it to local folks u can meet & check on before the sale.

Well know scam. They send you a check for more that you are asking, and you then pay the person picking it up the 'excess' for the shipping fees.

In a few days or weeks the 'certified check' turns out to be a very good copy, but bogus, the bank wants the money back they gave you, the money you handed the shipper is gone and so is your car.
