After finding the deal was bad and expensive, l told the dealership l was not going to buy a car but the dealer is keeping the deposit because lojack was installed.How can l get the deposit back?

A deal is a deal, you had the dealer modify the car so he may have a problem selling it now.

You probably cannot. Plan and simple you broke the contract of a purchase, the fact is the dealership now must deal with your withdrawal from the contract, and have every legal right to keep your deposit. It would have been different if the dealership broke the contract, but they followed what you wanted and are not stuck with your decision, and have to either spend the time and labor to remove the lo-jack or hope someone else will just happen to want this.

This is what happens when you make a decision while on panic mode, you can not walk in the next day and just say: ''hey l am out!'' there are ways to do stuff and penalties if you decide go other way, so it is gonna cost you your deposit.

Unless u have something in writing that describes exactly when u can get ur deposit back, the dealer can make up the rules on the fly. Since he had to spend money to install the system, it seems he has u over a barrel, even though he may be able to get his money back when he sells the car again, if the new buyer wants it.

You could take the dealer to Small Claims Court but my guess is that u do not have much chance of winning.

l think it is a case of u learning a lesson not to make hasty decisions, & paying for that lesson. You can not go through life changing ur mind & expecting others to pay for it.

Read before you sign. The dealership is not obligated to return any deposit. l was a car dealer for years. We always returned deposits but were not obligated to do so. It is up to the individual dealer. Dealing in small town Canada doing everything possible to make your customers happy was our number one goal we did it for 38 years and never had an unhappy customer. Bad news travels fast.
