l read it was in it 2 to 4 dollar range.it was hard to refine and hard to get..only the rich had cars.when petroleum was first refined home lighting was going from whale oil 5/6 dollars a gallon to kerosene.not much gas was being made.

l am assuming you mean our personal first car, not the first car ever produced. In 1919, halfway through the production run of the Ford Model T, gas was $0.25 per gallon, in 1920 it hit $0.30 per gallon, but fell to $0.26 per gallon in 1921 and would not hit $0.30 per gallon again until 1956 (in other words, for about 35 years, the price of gas stayed roughly the same).

When l bought my first car, gas was about $0.89/gallon. l could fill my tank for about $14.00!

Not cheap,. Gasoline was not even invented during the first car days. They ran on distillate (naptha) or kerosine. Probably 10 cents a gallon would have been about right, but that is more in real money than gas is now.
