Next year sometime I am considering buying a motorcycle.. l either wanna buy off a private party or a dealship.. so definitely a used bike. Obviously besides the cost of the bike itself, what other not-upfront fees would l probably have to pay? l know dealerships like to slip hidden fees and whatnot in. This will be the first vehicle I've actually bought myself.. so I've heard stuff like ''tags and title not included how much do those cost?

Also.. if you buy a motorcycle off a private party, do you have to pay sales tax? l ask because l live in TN where the sales tax is insanely high, almost 10%. But l live reasonably close to the border of 4 states, and l definitely would not mind traveling if l can beat the sales tax. Thanks for all !

If that is true I will definitely try to buy in Virginia or North Carolina where sales tax is like 5% instead of 10%...

The dealer charges for every little thing and the a strange thing called dealer prep. Which is bullshit. Decide what you want to pay for a bike in total. keep it to yourself. go in and dicker with the salesman. If he asks for $10 or a whatever as a sign of good faith then tell him to go fuck himself and walk out.
If they come up with a price higher than you decided then just walk out. most of them are low lifes..

No hidden fees.there is always, sales tax, title and registration costs.and from a dealer, possibly a dealer processing fee.

Not really hidden fees when buying from a dealership, just extra fees like documentary fees, which r legal, & they charge for handling ur paperwork. If the dealership also does ur motor vehicle (tags & registration) they also can charge u an extra fee to do that processing. It is bull, but they can legally do it. As for the sales tax. You will have to pay sales tax wherever u buy the bike, privately or through a dealer, new or used. And u will pay the sales tax when u or someone goes to title & register it. If u live in Tenn. & ur drivers license is Tenn., then u have to register it in Tenn. And yes, u can probably title & register it in a different local state, but do not get caught. If Tenn police spot an out of state motorcycle, the same motor cycle too often, they may stop u & u could get a ticket, or worse, get the bike impounded until u take care of registering it in Tenn. Not to mention any fines they may issue etc. And if u live relatively close to bordering states with lower sales tax, the police will probably be on the look out for those neighboring states plates. Of course most people do not want to pay the higher tax rate, & will try to get around it.
And a definate yes, they can enforce it. You have to pay ur state sales tax. You live in Tenn. & they will catch up with u one way or the other.
You do not pay the sales tax until u go to title & register the vehicle.
