I am looking at a 1997 BMW Z3 2.8 Engine. The odometer reads 54,800 miles. However, l ran carfax, The last two records are as follows. The dealer said it is over 10 years and exempt from odometer stuff. l do not trust him. The 2007 reading says 56,000 miles and now it has 54,800. how come?

Is this just a small electric problem etc? or rolled back?

The car is in fact, odometer exempt. Cars 10 years or older, do not have to state their odometer.

Also, sometimes people do not report the right reading, when they get a car titled.

l just made that mistake. Told the DMV it had 130k miles on it. It really has 180. Honest mistake, and l still own the car, so it did not hurt anyone.

But in the future, if someone carfaxes it, they will ask the same question you did.

If you do not trust it, do not buy it.

No fraud present. It clearly states that the actual odometer readings r unknown.

And the dealer is correct. 10 years & they no longer have to give accurate odometer readings. This is based on the fact that most cars that r 10 years old have the odometer rolled over 100K miles. So a car can not be sold advertising 32K miles when in fact it is probably 132K.

Bottom line, if it smells like a rat, it probably is. Trust ur insincts. Walk away. Find one with a clean Carfax.
